Chroma's 63600 series DC electronic loads are designed for testing multi-output AC/DC power supplies, DC/DC converters, chargers, batteries, server power supplies, and power electronic components. They are excellent for research, development, produc t ion, and incoming inspection applications.

The 63600's state of the art design uses DSP technology to simulate non-linear loads using a unique CZ operation mode allowing realistic loading behavior.

The 63600 series can draw its rated current under very low voltage (0.4V typical). This unique feature guarantees the best loading performance for modern Point-of-Load conditions and fuel cells.

The 63600 series can simulate a wide range of dynamic loading applications, with programmable load levels, slew rates, duration, and conducting voltage. The 63600 also has a dynamic sweep function to meet the test requirements of ATX power supplies. The instrument allows up to 100 sets of system operating status which can be stored in the EEPROM and recalled instantly for automated testing application.

Versatile System Configuration

Chroma's 63600 Series Programmable Electronic Load integrates micro-processing capability into each load module to optimize the speed and control among multiple load modules. All load modules are configured to work independently, though testing can be carried out simultaneously at multiple outputs via remote control to simulate real life application.

The Chroma 63600 electronic load mainframe accepts the user-installable 63600 series load modules for easy system configuration. The model 63600-5 mainframe holds five 63610 load modules to offer up to 10 100W load input channels with standard frontpanel inputs. The maximum power for a single mainframe is 2kW when five 63640-80-80 load modules are paralleled. This is suitable for testing multiple output switch mode power supplies, and many other types of power products. Using the GO/NG output port, production snapshots are made available to show the immediate pass/fail judgment of UUT. All modules on the mainframe share a common GPIB address to synchronize and speed up the control of the load modules and read back the operating data.

Application of Specific Load Simulation

The 63600 series load modules operate in constant voltage, current, resistance, power, or impedance to satisfy a wide range of test requirements. For example, the CV is designed to simulate batteries for charger testing.

Precise Measurements

The 63600 series provides three operating current ranges and a built-in 16-bit, precision A/D converter, achieving 0.025%+0.01%F.S., 0.05%+0.05%F.S. and 0.1%+0.1%F.S. accuracy for voltage, current and power measurement respectively. Precise measurements like these are ideal for testing power efficiency and other critical parameters of the UUT's. The precise measurement of 63600 series also meets the requirements of ENERGY STAR® and 80 Plus.

Besides, The 63600 series can measure OCP/OLP trip voltage and current by setting the step, step current, dwell time and so on. Then 63600 series will judge the test result for Pass or Fail and shows the maximum power (Pmax) on the display after completed the OCP/OLP test.

Two high-speed A/D are built in the 63600 series to measure the voltage and current at the same time and calculate the true power value for displaying without distortion.

Constant Impedance Mode (CZ Mode)

The unique CZ mode des igned in 63600 series can improve the loading behavior of CC & CP mode and makes the simulated loading current more realistic.

The 63000 Series programmable DC electronic loads are reliable, precision instruments primarily designed to test switching power suppl ies, A/D power suppl ies, power electronic components, adapters, 3C batteries and chargers. Its maximum 350W rated power makes it suitable for testing numerous types of lower power devices.

The 63000 Series offers models in two operating voltages 150V models, with 250W and 350W power levels up to 60A in a single unit. Their compact and light weight design make these loads easy to move around which is ideal for R&D and design validation.

Each model of the 63000 Series has unique user-def ined waveform (UDW) funct ion capable of simulating real-world custom waveforms. In addition, a data storage function has been built in for saving and recalling up to 100 stored settings at any time. For automated testing, these save and recall functions can save a great deal of time.

The 63000 Series has 3 power ranges that can precisely measure the voltage and current in real time. Since short circuit testing is a critical test item, the 63000 provides short circuit simulation to effectively address application demands for power and automated testing.

To avoid charging the motherboard capacitors when the switching power supply powers on with surge current triggering the power supply over current protection mechanism making the power supply fail to turn on successfully, the power supply requires conducting a turn on capacitive load test. The 63000 Series provides CZ mode for turn on capacitive load simulation to tackle this testing demand. CZ mode simulates the actual inductance, impedance and capacitance for loading making the load current closer to real conditions.

User-Defined Waveform (UDW)

The conventional way of loading a current waveform is through DAQ cards or function generators. The 63000 Series provides an enhanced feature, User Defined Waveform (UDW), to simulate the actual current profiles and waveforms. Each load is capable of storing up to 10 sets of waveforms with each containing up to 1.5 million data points in the built-in flash memory. It also provides voltage peak measurement during actual loading conditions avoiding the need for an oscilloscope which saves time and cost.

These units can be synchronously paralleled up to 240kW and dynamically synchronized for generating complex multi-channel transient profiles. Ultra High Power Density & User-defined Hot Key Design

Chroma's 63200A series high power electronic loads with digital signal microprocessor (200MHz) built in have the optimal speed and control performance. The ultra high density power (6kW@4U) not only saves room, its super high voltage (0.015%+0.015%F.S.) and current (0.04%+0.04%F.S.) measurement accuracy ensures the fidelity of results. In addition, the entire series can either be operated by hand or controlled remotely. For higher power demands, master/slave control can be used to parallel multiple units for operation. These electronic loads also have synchronous loading capabilities to simulate the actual loading status.

The world leading ultra high power density design overturns the concept of oversize and difficult moving high power electronic load. It saves plenty of room space and solves the space issue when upgrading the electronic load in an automated test system. Moreover, the 63200A provides 4 sets of user-defined hot keys that enable the user to enter the operation mode quickly.

Iconic Function Selections

The iconic function selections make it easier for users to control/operate the 63200A series. The basic and advance functions are iconized, users can select the functions via the rotary or arrow keys. The abbreviations are shown in the icons and the full descriptions are shown on the VFD display for users to easily operate without the need for an operation manual.

The 63200A series is equipped with flippable front panel for 7U, 10U & 13U height models with maximum flippable angles 70°. This design allows convenient access to controls from any height.

Application of Basic Loads

The 63200A series electronic loads operate in constant voltage, current, resistance, or power modes to satisfy a wide range of test requirements. For instance, the CC and CR modes ensure that the UUT voltage outputs remain stable when the load varies. For battery chargers or charging stations, CV mode can change their output voltage to ensure the precision of the charging current. When the UUT is a battery, the electronic load changes to simulate device loading behavior. Many battery discharge applications and power consumption profiles can be simulated for analysis, making the CP mode the best choice for simulating electronic device loads.

Master / Slave Parallel Control

When the need is for increased power, two or more loads can be run in parallel to achieve the desired load current. The 63200A provides the user with smart Master/ Slave mode controls which enables the user to program the load currents of the Master and have them automatically calculated and downloaded to the slave loads. Using several loads in parallel to emulate a single load dramatically simplifies the operation. All models of the series can be integrated into a 41U standard rack to save space. The 63200A can be controlled and reconfigured with automated testing applications via standard USB or optional Ethernet and GPIB interfaces.

The 63200E load's master/slave control application enables units with the same voltage specification to be used in parallel and synchronized dynamically to meet the power testing requirements. In addition, a 255-set data storage function has been built-in for recall of the stored settings at any time. Application of Basic Loads

The 63200E series electronic loads operate in constant voltage, current, resistance, and power or impedance modes to satisfy a wide range of test requirements. For example, the CC and CR modes can ensure that the UUT voltage outputs remain stable when the load varies. For battery chargers or charging stations, CV mode can change the output voltage to ensure the charging current is precise. When the UUT is a battery, the electronic load changes to simulate device loading behavior. Many battery discharge applications and power consumption profiles can be simulated for analysis, making the CP mode the best choice for simulating electronic device loads.

Dynamic Load

New designs of electronic devices operate at very high speeds and demand rapid transient response characteristics. To address these applications, the 63200E Series offers high speed and programmable dynamic loading for testing. The figure shown below exhibits the programmable parameters such as current high/low level, T1/T2, rise/fall rate and execution times. As the load current continuously changes, the internal monitoring mechanism and line circuit can minimize the current waveform distortion with the dynamic change up to 5 kHz.

The dynamic mode provides a unique simulation capability allowing users to set the number of times each cycle repeats from 1~65535. This feature is suitable for peak current testing of fuses, on/off switches, coaxial cables, relays and batteries.

A motherboard can contain many capacitors. To avoid charging the motherboard capacitors when the server powers on with surge current triggering the power supply over current protection mechanism making the power supply fail to turn on successfully, the power supply requires conducting a turn on capacitive load test. The 63200E Series provides CZ mode for turn on capacitive load simulation to tackle this testing demand.

CZ mode is different from the CC and CP loading modes, as it simulates the actual inductance, impedance and capacitance for loading. Therefore, the load current is closer to the real situation. This is a voltage and current waveform simulation of the switching power supply in the turn on capacitive load test.

Programmable Load Timing

The 63200E series electronic load has 255 programmable timings built-in for various load condition simulations. Repeat loading can be done in a single sequence or all sequences. The minimum time of a sequence is 100ms and the resolution is 100ms. Following lists the applications for common programmed sequences.

  1. Battery discharge (electric car, and electric locomotive, etc.) simulating various dynamic load current waveforms, providing two levels above dynamic current simulation or one shot load simulation. (For single channel output UUT)
  2. Power supply mixed load modulation. (For multichannel output UUT)
  3. Load simulation for fuel cell life cycle testing.

User-defined Hot Key Design

As a constant current source, the LED driver has an output voltage range with a constant output current. LED drivers are usually tested in one of the following ways:

  • With LEDs
  • Using resistors for loading
  • Using Electronic Loads in Constant Resistance (CR) mode, or Constant Voltage (CV) mode

However all these testing methods each have their own disadvantages.

As shown on the V-I curve in figure 1, the LED has a forward voltage VF and a operating resistance (Rd). When using a resistor as loading, the V-I curve of the resistor is not able to simulate the V-I curve of the LED as shown in blue on figure 1. This may cause the LED driver to not start up due to the difference in V-I characteristic between the resistors and the LEDs. When using Electronic Loads, the CR and CV mode settings are set for when the LED is under stable operation and therefore, is unable to simulate turn on or PWM brightness control characteristics. This may cause the LED driver to function improperly or trigger it's protection circuits. These testing requirements can be achieved when using a LEDs as a load; however, issues regarding the LED aging as well as different LED drivers may require different types of LEDs or a number of LEDs. This makes it inconvenient for mass production testing.

Chroma has created the industries first LED operating mode for simulating LED loading with our 63110A load model from our 6310A series Electronic Loads. By setting the LED driver's output voltage, and current, the Electronic Load can simulate the LED's loading characteristics. The LED's forward voltage and operating resistance can also be set to further adjust the loading current and ripple current to better simulate LED characteristics. The 63110A design also has increased bandwidth to allow for PWM dimming testing.

Figure 2 shows the current waveform from a LED load. Figure 3 shows the current waveform from 63110A's LED mode load function. From figures 2 and 3, the start up voltage and current of the LED driver is very similar. Figure 4 shows the dimming current waveform of the LED. Figure 5 shows the dimming current waveform when using 63110A as a load.

The internal resistance (Rr) can be adjusted to simulate the LED driver output ripple current. The traditional E-load can not simulate the ripple current of LED shown as Figure 6. Figure 7 shows the ripple current waveform from a LED load. Figure 8 shows the ripple current waveform from the 63110A LED mode load function.

Figure 9 shows the current waveform from a resistive load. Figure 10 shows the current waveform from a CR mode of an Electronic Load loading. Figure 9 and 10 current waveform differs significantly from that of LED loading, especially the voltage and current overshoot, which may cause the LED driver to go into protection. Using resistive load or CR mode to test LED drivers may cause the LED drivers to fail to turn on as shown in Figure 11.

The Chroma 6310A series Programmable DC Electronic Load is ideal for the test and evaluation of multi-output AC/DC power supplies, DC/DC converters, chargers and power electronic components. It is designed for applications in research and development, production, and incoming inspection. The system is configured by plugging the user selectable load modules into the system mainframe. The user interfaces include an ergonomically designed user friendly keypad on the front panel and the following computer interfaces: RS-232, USB or GPIB.

The 6310A series offers 8 different modules with power ratings from 100 watts to 1,200 watts, current ratings from 0.5mA to 240A, and voltage ratings from 0.5mV to 500V. The loads can be operated in constant current, constant voltage, constant power and constant resistance and may be placed in parallel for increased current and power.

The 6310A series can simulate a wide range of dynamic loading applications. The waveforms programmable parameters include: slew rate, load level, duration and conducting voltage. In addition, up to 100 sets of system operating status can be stored in EEPROM and recalled instantly for automated testing applications.

Real time measurement of voltage and current are integrated into each 6310A load module using a 16-bit precision measurement circuit. The user can perform on line voltage measurements and adjustments or simulate short circuit test using the user friendly keypad on the front panel. Additionally, the 6310A series offers an optional remote controller for automated production lines.

The 6310A series has a self-diagnosis routines to maintain instrument performance. It also provides OP, OC, OT protection, and alarm indicating OV, reverse polarity to guarantee quality and reliability for even in the most demanding engineering testing and ATE applications.

The 6310A loads offer high speed, programmable dynamic load simulation and control capability. The figure below shows the programmable parameters of the 6310A modules:

The programmable slew rate makes the simulation of transient load change demanded by real life applications possible. The 6310A internal waveform generator is capable of producing a maximum slew rate at 10A/μs, and dynamic cycling up to 20kHz.

Parallel Control

Each 6310A load module has an integrated 16-bit precision A/D converter for voltage measurement with an accuracy of 0.025%+0.025% of full scale. The built-in resistive load current sensing circuit is capable of measuring current with an accuracy of 0.05%+0.05% of full scale.

Powerful Measurements

By simply choosing the channel and setting the OCP parameters (start current, end current, step current and dwell time) from the front panel, the 6310A series provides a fast and easy OCP testing solution. The 6310A series will automatically detect the OCP point, making it an ideal solution for design verification as well as production line testing.

Chroma Model 6330A series high speed DC electronic improves CPU clock, baud rate, parser and added synchronic parallel function for fast operation, which is ideal for auto test system integration to increase your manufacturing test throughput. Plugging the user selectable load modules into the system mainframe can also provide easy system configuration and future reconfiguration configure the system.

The 6330A family offers 8 types of modular loads with power ranging from 30 watts to 1200 watts, current from 0.5mA to 240A, and voltage measurement from 0.5mV to 500V. Each load is isolated and floating, programmable in dual current range and measuring voltage range, and capable of synchronizing with other modules for control operating. The load can be operated in constant current, constant voltage, and constant resistance.

With Synchronic parallel control capability, 6330A series loads allow users to parallel and synchronize more than one load together from an internal loading control signal. This feature provides synchronic dynamic loading test for multi-output power and high power test solution.

Real time measurement of voltage, current, is integrated into each 6330A load module using a 16-bit precision measurement circuit. The user can perform on line voltage measurement and adjustment, or simulate short circuit test using the simple keypad on the front panel.

The 6330A have self-diagnosis routine to maintain instrumental performance all the time. It is also protected against OP, OC, OT protection, and alarm indicating OV, reverse polarity to guarantee quality and reliability for even the most demanding engineering testing and ATE application.

The FET technology accomplishes minimum input resistance and enables the load to sink high current even at very low voltage. For example, model 63303A is capable of sinking 60A at 1V output, and well-suited for testing the new 3V low voltage power supplies. Low voltage operation, down to zero volt, is possible at correspondingly reduced current level. (see below)
